Dating While Sober

Those who are in the early stages of sobriety and are participating in alcoholics or narcotics anonymous in NH might find themselves feeling lonely. This natural human reaction can lead us to date or play the field looking for a sober companion. Although everyone works through sobriety in different ways, it is always important to weigh the risks of dating in early recovery.

It can create a dangerous coping mechanism

It’s pretty standard for addictions to deal with transfer addiction, such as with food or fitness. With all the emotions that come into a new relationship, many of those in early recovery will often throw themselves into a new relationship. A relationship can impact the time and focus someone puts on their recovery.

Finding the balance of opening up can be difficult

As you start to work through the 12 steps, you might find that you are learning a bit more about yourself, and sometimes that can happen in waves. Healthy relationships with a sober companion rely on communication and trust, but you may find yourself oversharing or under-sharing your journey with your new partner, which can overwhelm them or leave them in the dark about your addiction.

You could find yourself too attached to the person

Recovery leaves many feeling vulnerable, and trying to balance the energy and time for both a new relationship and sobriety can be difficult. The juggling act often leads to an individual focusing so much time on their new partner that they begin to rely on them for emotional survival, and even lead to some believing they cannot survive without the other person.

There is no way to tell when you are going to meet someone you are compatible with, but the best way to prepare for that new relationship around the corner is to be patient and continuously work toward a better you. Your priority should be your health and well-being, and that begins with working through the steps to gain back control of your life in a positive and healthy way.
