How Positive Relationships Help Recovery

Humans are social creatures by nature, and nearly everyone values their past and current relationships. After entering transitional housing at GateHouse Sober Community many participants realize that some relationships can be toxic for our well-being and act as triggers, which can lead to relapse. Just as unhealthy relationships can hurt our recovery, there are many positive relationships we can form that help us in more ways than one.

They can hold you accountable

When you have an active relationship with a spouse, friend, family member, or fellow recovered addict, they can hold you accountable. Having someone around that is checking in to ensure you get to your meetings, go to work, and follow through with other daily responsibilities will help daily life and productivity.

You can go to them for help

If you hone close relationships with other residents in your transitional housing, you never have to feel that a problem is too big or small to talk about. These groups exist as positive support systems for you, and being able to work through your problems can give you the answer(s) you need.

They can be your confidante

Opening up emotionally after shutting others out for so long can be hard, but positive relationships with others can give you the chance to express your emotions and talk through your thoughts without feeling judged or guilty.

They can be your sober friend

Whether this is someone within your community or a friend you can trust, you might need all the help you can get in social settings that trigger you. Positive relationships where you can rely on someone to be your sober friend during an event means staying on the right path and having someone available to you when you need it most.

Though we can find these relationships outside of transitional housing, GateHouse Sober Community offers a community where you will quickly develop friendly and lasting friendships with other participants. You will quickly find that recovery is so much easier when you don’t walk through it alone. If you have more questions, call us today at (855) 448-3638.
